Annual Report
2021

Overview

2021 Revenue structure

Overall, GVL managed to achieve a €32.5m increase of its revenues in 2021. The decrease of broadcast remuneration by the public service broadcasters amounting to €2.8m compared to the previous year was more than sufficiently offset by an increase of broadcast remuneration of private radio and television channels of €8.6m, an increase of the income from private copying remuneration collected by the ZPÜ (the joint collection centre for private copying levies) of €19.2m and an increase of revenue in the public performance sector of €4.1m. In all other sectors, GVL’s income situation is stable overall and mostly positive and therefore lies within expectations.

Broadcast

In terms of broadcast remuneration, GVL yielded €92.5m compared to €85.4m in the previous year. This means that the overall result for broadcasting remuneration rose by 7.1 %. One of the reasons for this positive development lies in the back payments from private radio broadcasters for 2020.

In this context, the revenues of the private radio stations should be highlighted. They grew to €28.1m (previous year: €21.9m) by 28.3%. This was mainly due to the conclusion of the current tariff for the private radio and a lumpsum back payment for the previous years. Ad-funded private TV companies paid €10.2m (previous year: €7.9m), this corresponds to an increase of 30.3%.

Public performance

Revenues from public performance grew by €4.1m to €30.7m. The income situation of public performance recovered by 15.6% compared to the even deeper slumps following COVID-19 related closures of restaurants and shops and the culture and sport event venues; they have, however, not reached pre-pandemic levels yet.

Reproduction

Reproduction rights collections led to income of €111.3m compared to €92.1m in the previous year. These are mainly fees collected for private copying.

Rental and lending

In this sector, with a downward trend in rental and lending usages, a small decline was reported compared to the previous year. This amounts to a drop of €0.1m, resulting in €1.8m in 2021.
