GVL Assembly of Rights Holders 2021: Rights holders elect their delegates in a virtual procedure for the first time

In the past year, GVL held its Assembly of Rights Holders in a pure virtual format for the first time. Rights holders elected their 22 delegates via a specially set-up online portal for the next four years. Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen opened the event, Dr. Christian Höppner took on the role of the election official and the GVL general management provided comprehensive insights into the work of GVL.

On 3 and 4 June 2021, GVL held its Assembly of Rights Holders (BV2021) over a period of two days and online only for the first time in its history. The entire event was transmitted from a specially set-up studio via live stream due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eckart von Hirschhausen opened the 2021 Assembly (BV2021)

Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen, a GVL rights holder himself, put the guests in the mood with his humorous keynote speech to the two-day event. “The passion for culture and music is something I share with all the GVL rights holders”, stressed the physician and cabaret artist. Regarding the time after COVID-19, he said: “During the pandemic, many performers have had some very tough months and years. I am totally convinced that we are facing a revival of the sector with new approaches, game concepts and a view to sustainability.”

Review of the past financial years

Day one focussed on the review of the past four years and the outlook on the upcoming developments at GVL. The two Managing Directors, Guido Evers and Tilo Gerlach particularly concentrated on the digital transformation of GVL in their report. Said digital transformation left a significant cultural, technical and procedural mark on GVL throughout the last few years. They also provided deeper insights into the “engine room” of GVL in this context and answered questions of the rights holders live.

Election of delegates on day two of the event

On the second day, in a total of 15 group assemblies, GVL rights holders elected their Delegates who are going to represent their interests in the Assembly of Shareholders and Delegates, the most important decision-making committee of GVL, in the next four years. The elections of the delegates were conducted by Prof Christian Höppner, General Secretary of the German Music Council and a GVL member himself, as a cello player and conductor, and thus entitled to vote. In total, more than 1,000 “ballot papers” were submitted.

The new Assembly of Shareholders and Delegates with six new delegates

We welcomed six new and 16 re-elected delegates into the core governing body of GVL at the first ordinary session of the Assembly of Shareholders and Delegates. Detlev Tiemann, singer in the choir of the Hamburg Staatsoper, was confirmed in his position as chairman by the Assembly of Shareholders and Delegates. Tiemann has been active in the governing bodies of GVL since 2000, holding positions such as Board member, member of the Distribution Committee and Chairman of the Tariff Committee. Tiemann’s deputies are Andreas Klöpfel (COO & CFO Central Europe, Warner Music Group) and Tonio Bogdanski (CFO Central Europe, Universal Music Group).
