GVL Board resolves unanimously to allocate grants to 16 cultural projects

Hans Reinhard Biere elected to the distribution and tariff committee.

GVL's ordinary Board meeting took place on 19 March 2013 in Berlin. The 24-member GVL Board represents all artists, producers of sound recordings and event organisers who had assigned their neighbouring rights to GVL. Under the chairmanship of Hartmut Karmeier, and joined by the GVL Managing Directors Dr. Tilo Gerlach and Guido Evers as well as the two Associates' representatives Gerald Mertens (German Orchestra Association (registered association)) and Prof. Dieter Gorny (Federal Association of the Music Industry (registered association), Board members discussed current topics such as the economic development and the political framework GVL operates in, plus plans for the next distribution. Two representatives of the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) took part in the Board meeting, as per usual.

One of the main items of the meeting were the decisions on grants: Based on the grant guidelines, the Board decided unanimously to give financial support through GVL to 16 politico-cultural projects. These are, among others:

  • Various projects of the charitable project society of the German Music Council in 2013 such as the continued support for the German Music Information Centre (MIZ) and the promotion of elites "Pop Camp – master classes for pop music"
  • The project "Instruments' bus" of the "Sounding Museum", Berlin, with the aim to attract childrens' and pupils' interest in instrumental music by providing them pedagogic guidance in kindergardens and schools in Brandenburg in 2013
  • The project "Young Opera Schloss Weikersheim 2013" of the Jeunesses Musicales, for the performance of Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni" under the musical direction by Bruno Weil in August 2013
  • An intercultural stage project of German and Brasilian artists under the motto "Music – Dance" which is intended to be rehearsed for the Young Euro Classic event in July/August 2013.
  • Further support of the initiative music in 2014 as a support facility for rock, pop and jazz music in Germany

Guido Evers and Dr. Tilo Gerlach, Managing Directors of GVL thanked the Board members for their decisions and stated:  "We are pleased that we are in a position to provide financial support to exciting politico-cultural projects again this year. On behalf of our members, we wish to particularly promote such events and initiatives that campaign in a particular way and with great engagement for the importance of the music culture in our country and beyond the German borders, in order to guarantee a broad cultural diversity."

In the course of the ordinary Board meeting, Hans Reinhard Biere, who had been appointed since the beginning of the year as successor to Gerhard Szperalski to the Board, was elected as a member of the distribution and the tariff committees of GVL. He thus replaces his predecessor Szperalski also on these committees.

GVL is the only collective management organisation for artists and producers of sound recordings in Germany. Founded in 1959, GVL now represents more than 130,000 artists and event organisers worldwide, plus more than 28,000 labels with regards to administering their neighbouring rights.
