"We need legal regulations for dealing with AI"

The GVL represents around 12,000 actors and dubbing actors. The Bundesverband Schauspiel (BFFS) is one of the four associates of the GVL. We spoke to BFFS chair Leslie Malton about the current situation of her fellow actors and the challenges facing the industry.

Performers: Launch of the initial and subsequent distributions 2020-2022

In the course of this distribution run, GVL pays out a total of EUR 70m to performers and their legal successors, of which EUR 45m relate to the initial distribution 2022, and EUR 25m are associated with the subsequent distributions 2020 and 2021.

Sandy Backhaus, Head of the Rights Holders’ Division for Performers, explains: “We are happy to report that we managed to increase the payout amount compared to the previous year’s distribution; overall, we could distribute close to EUR 13m more than in autumn 2022.”

Clone of GVL on the Reeperbahn Festival 2022

Apart from international gigs the festival also offers a number of events on exciting contents for international trade visitors. From 21 to 24 September, in the course of 130 different sessions, talks, networking events and interviews about twelve topic groups, 350 speakers and presenters provide insights into the current challenges and issues with respect to live entertainment, recorded music, media and journalism, among others.

Registration deadline for sound recordings released 1963 to 1971 (Extension of protection period)

This message is only relevant for you if you participated in sound recordings with one-time payment (buy-out contract) in the years 1963 to 1971


the protection period for sound recordings released from 1963 onwards has been legally extended from 50 to 70 years. Artists are entitled to a share in the sales revenues of such recordings.  

If you have not yet registered these titles in my.gvl, please do so by 31.01.2024.

Transparency Report and Digital Annual Report for 2022 published

In this edition, we are looking back on a rather eventful 2022. GVL income has significantly exceeded our expectations with an amount of €235.4m in 2022. When looking back on the three COVID-19-years, GVL managed to navigate its way through the challenging times of the past years rather successfully. At the same time, we used this period to undertake crucial steps regarding the technical and organisational development of GVL.

GVL forwards foreign remuneration to performing artists and recording producers

Already earlier this month, international revenues were distributed to the entitled performing artists. Now, as planned, the remuneration for recording producers will follow these days. As in the previous year, we have thus achieved our goal of distributing royalties from abroad to our rightsholders on a quarterly basis.

GVL on tour internationally

The most important events in the international calendar of events include the General Assembly of the International Confederation of Performers' Rights Societies (SCAPR) and the meeting of international producers' representatives in the Performance Rights Committee (PRC Meeting): Both meetings took place in May and GVL was present as one of the leading societies.
